About Me
A Story of Craft, Courage & Coming Back to Jewellery
Austine was created from a lifelong love of making and a return to a craft that was always meant to be.
Behind the brand is a trained silversmith who originally studied jewellery design for four years at The School of Jewellery in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and at Derby University, developing traditional hand-making skills in precious metals alongside contemporary design techniques.
In a final year marked by personal loss, tools were put down and a different chapter began, but creativity never truly disappeared.
Thirty-five years later, in January 2024, that spark was reignited with a local jewellery-making course taken simply to see whether the craft was still there. It was and the first piece made on returning was a gold diamond ring. The joy of creating again was immediate.
That same year, the ring was entered into Britain’s Next Gem on Jewellery Maker TV. What began as a day out quickly turned into something extraordinary, progressing from the semi-finals to the final – and winning!
That moment marked the beginning of Austine.
Award Winning Foundations
From the earliest stages of training, craftsmanship and design excellence were recognised.
While studying at Birmingham’s School of Jewellery, the founder was awarded multiple Certificates of Merit from the British Jewellers’ Association, including:
- First Prize in City & Guilds (First Year)
- Certificate of Merit in Fashion Jewellery
These awards reflect not only technical ability, but a strong design instinct and attention to detail. Qualities that continue to underpin every piece created today.
Why
?
People often ask why my business is called Austine when my name is Justine. The name is actually a thoughtful play on both my identity and my craft.
In my logo, the “Au” is written in gold. This isn’t accidental. “Au” is the chemical symbol for gold, which ties directly to what I do as a jeweller. The “stine” that follows is in silver, another precious metal I work with. So the colours and design of the logo visually represent the materials at the heart of my business.
Beyond that, Austine is also derived from a Latin word meaning magnificent. A perfect reflection of the elegance and intention behind permanent jewellery.
So while the name connects to me, it also beautifully represents the metals I use and the meaning I want my brand to carry.
Jewellery With Meaning
Today Austine specialises in permanent jewellery alongside handcrafted silver and gold pieces. From delicate welded bracelets to bespoke commissions and celebratory designs.
Every item is created with precision, care and respect for traditional techniques, while embracing modern ways of wearing jewellery. Whether marking a friendship, milestone, relationship or personal achievement, the focus is always on pieces that feel meaningful, personal and beautifully made.
